Espinheira Santa, Cancerosa (Maytenus Ilicifolia) is an evergreen shrub growing just 1 - 2 m tall, or a tree with a globose crown that can be up to 5 m. The smooth bole can be 15 - 25cm in diameter. It has a dense symmetrical canopy of glossy, dark green, leathery leaves, with thorny margins and cream-colored edging. Small cream-colored flowers develop in early spring followed by small oblong, red fruits that open exposing the white aril, forming a beautiful contrast.
