- Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae. Known for their exquisite fragrance, gardenias are popular ornamental shrubs that feature waxy, creamy-white flowers and glossy, dark green leaves. They are highly prized for their beauty and sweet scent.
- The Tahitian Gardenia is a dense, bushy tropical flowering shrub, native to French Polynesia and widely cultivated in Tahiti. Also known as the Tiare Flower, it has large, intensely fragrant, pinwheel-shaped white blooms and is a fast grower, reaching up to 20 feet. Its a culturally significant flower used for leis and other decorations.
- Care: When plants are mature and ready to be set out, select a lightly shaded location, plant in fertile, well-draining, acidic soil; water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, feed a good-quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in the Spring. Prune lightly and often after flowering.
- Indoor Growing: Gardenias are not recommended for year-round indoor culture. Potted plants can be brought indoors briefly to display and enjoy the blooms, but they should be returned outdoors afterward.
- Climate: Tahitian Gardenias are moderately cold tolerant and are recommended for Zones 8, 9, 10, 11. In Zones 8 and 9A, mulch plants heavily well ahead of first frost.
